Dr Chris Bourke MLA today attended the launch of SkinKeeper for iPhone, on behalf of
ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher MLA.
"The ACT Government InnovationConnect Grant has been instrumental in enabling Canberra company, The Health Safari to develop its first product - SkinKeeper for iPhone - an application (app) which will help doctors and patients partner to manage their skin cancer risk." Dr Bourke said.
"Since its inception, the ACT Government InnovationConnect Grants Scheme has provided financial support to assist 65 businesses in taking an innovative product or service to investment readiness or commercialisation."
"SkinKeeper for iPhone has been designed to enable people to track their skin cancer risk and share important monitoring information with their GP or specialist. It is hoped that SkinKeeper for iPhone will save lives by helping catch cancers early, before they become metastatic."
"The app also aims to educate people about what ‘bad moles' look like, and provide people with instructions on how to check their skin." Dr Bourke said.
"SkinKeeper for iPhone will greatly benefit healthcare consumers by providing them with a simple, yet comprehensive method of monitoring moles which they are concerned about, enabling them to take an active part in collecting information to share with their healthcare professionals."
"This is a significant and exciting development which effectively responds to the significant risk of skin cancer, which is particularly evident in Australia".
"It is particularly appropriate that SkinKeeper for iPhone is launched during Skin Cancer Awareness Week, which urges all Australians to be proactive about protecting and monitoring their skin",
Dr Bourke said.
