ACT top of the class on VET graduate employment

Released 31/01/2012

ACT top of the class on VET graduate employment

The Productivity Commission’s 2012 Report on Government Services shows that our Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector continues to show a strong record of achievement.

According to the report, in the last surveyed year the ACT was among the strongest performers when providing positive employment outcomes for government-funded VET graduates.

Importantly, the ACT ranked first when it came to delivering jobs to government-funded VET students, with 70.2 per cent who had been previously unemployed finding jobs and 67.6 per cent improving their employment circumstances after graduating.

Overall 93.6 per cent of these graduates had either found employment and/or were undertaking further study. This compares with 86.1 percent of such VET graduates at the national level.

Government funded VET Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates, female graduates, and graduates from a non-English speaking background were also more likely to be in employment after training than anywhere else in Australia

Following on from last year’s report, the ACT again outperformed all other states and territories when it came to the rate of VET students taking up high-level (Diploma or above) qualifications.

The ACT also had the highest proportion of students completing Certificate III level and above, with 81.0 percent doing so in the ACT compared to the national average of 74.1 percent.

The superior performance of the ACT on measures like VET graduate employment bears out this Government’s policy of fostering excellence in skills-based education and training.

Through ongoing investment in VET and by working closely with education and training organisations, this Government will continue to provide employment options to the community and strengthen the ACT workforce.
