ACT Chief Minister and National Year of Reading Primary Ambassador, Katy Gallagher, today encouraged Canberra dads and their kids (aged 3-5 years of age) to take part in a special story time entitled Dads' Big Day Out, this Sunday (19 February 2012) at the Dickson Library from 2.30 pm.
"Dads' Big Day Out, gives dads the opportunity to share stories, rhymes and songs with their children, as well as talk with other dads about the different ways to encourage reading with their children at home," the Chief Minister said.
"This is a special event specifically for dads and their children, and will be presented by male staff in a relaxed and supportive environment.
"Being a role model in reading is one of the most important things dads can do to encourage their children to love books. This is an excellent chance for dads to spend some quality time with their kids, and to promote literacy, especially to young boys."
The Chief Minister said that Libraries ACT offers regular story time sessions at all its public libraries during school terms, as well as a variety of programs and resources for children and teenagers of all ages.
"Story time encourages children to use their imagination, and helps develop listening and language skills, both key pre-reading skills. Story time sessions are full of stories, rhymes and fun songs," the Chief Minister concluded.
National Year of Reading Ambassador, Simon Corbell, also believes in the importance of reading with his children.
"Reading is an important life skill as well as a pleasurable pastime. If you create a home with books, your family is more likely to be a reading family, with all the benefits that provides your children.
"As a dad, I encourage other dads to take part in this great free event and to continue to read with their children at home," Minister Corbell said.
