Data shows property crime decreasing in the Capital

Released 31/01/2012

The latest report card on policing services in the Territory shows a positive downward trend in property crime as well as high levels of satisfaction of services provided to the community, Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, said today.

"The report shows that the rate of offences against property have decreased, particularly stolen motor vehicles down 31 per cent, burglary involving theft of property down 17 per cent, from the previous year's reporting period," Mr Corbell said today.

"Property crime is an area of criminality that affects many Canberrans and can damage the perceptions of safety in our community and for this reason the ACT Labor Government has made this downward trend a continuing priority.

Mr Corbell said the report also shows that victims of crime in ACT are more likely to contact police regarding their incident.

"I am glad to see that ACT Policing has built a culture of trust and confidence within the ACT community with ACT Policing being ranked number one in community satisfaction compared to all other jurisdictions," he said.

Another highlight of the report was road fatalities in the Territory per 100 000 registered vehicles recorded below the national average.

"I look forward to seeing the ACT remain one of the safest places in the country to live and visit."
