Six of Canberra's elite join the Sporting Hall of Fame

Released 26/08/2011

062/11

Six of Canberra’s elite joined the pantheon of sporting achievement in the ACT by being inducted into the ACT Sporting Hall of Fame at a luncheon held today.

The latest list of inductees into the ACT Sporting Hall of Fame is:

  • Ned Zelic (football),
  • Ben Taylor (hockey),
  • Brennon Dowrick (gymnastics),
  • Joan Kellett (swimming),
  • Peter Baskett (basketball), and
  • Tim Sheens (rugby league).

Canberra is the most active and healthy community in Australia. One of the reasons for this is the calibre of today’s inductees in sport. These athletes are great role models for Canberrans of all ages and abilities, and demonstrate to us all the benefits of being physically active.

The ACT has a long established tradition of producing elite athletes across a diverse range of sports. This is a credit, not only to the athletes themselves but to countless administrators, volunteers, coaches and officials who have also contributed to the success of these athletes’.

I congratulate each of the inductees on the significant contribution they have made to their respective sports.

Previous inductees to the Hall of Fame include Jim Roberts (futsal/football), Ron Tuckerman (lawn bowls), Sacha Wainwright (football), Gary Belcher (rugby league) and Joe Roff (rugby union).
