Released 21/03/2012
Local seniors were treated to free concerts today featuring the Band of the Royal Military College Duntroon as part of ACT Seniors Week 2012 celebrations.Minister for Ageing Joy Burch, who opened the first of two concerts at Erindale Vikings Club on behalf of Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, said the event was an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the commitment and contribution of seniors to the ACT community.“These concerts was just one way of thanking seniors for their enormous contribution to our community and also served to bring friends and family together to experience the joy and excitement of a live music performance,” Ms Burch said. “The concerts enable our senior citizens to access, embrace and appreciate a diverse range of music genres in a comfortable entertainment venue.” “Concerts like this are immensely important in terms of nurturing the core of their personal growth and emotional wellbeing and serve to strengthen the fabric of social inclusion to ensure that our seniors remain active and socially engaged.”The 2012 ACT Seniors Week theme is ‘Variety in Life’.“Today’s concert was yet another example of how we as a community in general, and seniors in particular, can include some more of that essential ingredient ‘variety’ to add spice to our lives,” Ms Burch said. Other activities to mark ACT Seniors Week 2012 include the Life’s Reflections Photographic Exhibition currently on display at the Canberra Centre and the Seniors Day Expo which will be held at the Old Bus Depot Markets at Kingston tomorrow.
