Golf Australia has announced that they have been successful in securing Professional Golf Association (LPGA) sanctioning for the Australian Women’s Golf Tournament in 2013.
This is a major coup for women’s golf in Australia and only serves to strengthen the Championship when it is played for the first time in the national capital at Royal Canberra Golf Club during Canberra’s Centenary celebrations.
Canberra has a growing reputation as an excellent location to host major-sporting events and there is little doubt this high-profile event will bring in a good many visitors to the city over the four days of the event both nationally and internationally.
The Championship also offers the opportunity to increase the profile of Canberra to national and international television audiences as it is expected that LPGA sanctioning will increase the international media contingent following the event.
The Women’s Australian Open is one of our key sporting events for the Centenary in 2013 and will be a fantastic opportunity for people in Canberra and the surrounding region to see the very best in women’s golf and enjoy the stunning surrounds of one of Canberra’s most historic golf courses.
Golf Australia made the announcement in Melbourne this morning with the sanctioning confirmed in time for the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Golf Open in February 2012. The Women’s Australian Open in now a co-sanctioned event between the LPGA and the ALPG tours.
Precise dates for the 2013 Championship are expected to be locked in mid-2012 in line with the international golfing calendar.
