Canberrans wanted to join our firefighters

Released 10/02/2012

Firefighters are among the most trusted people in our community and Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, has urged aspiring Canberrans to apply for a position, as part of a new recruitment campaign for ACT Fire & Rescue, that was launched today.

"ACT Fire & Rescue will be searching to fill a range of positions to make sure the ACT remains well protected against the threat of fire," Mr Corbell said.

Mr Corbell said the 16 new recruits will be trained in all areas of firefighting.

"ACT Fire & Rescue also deal with emergency rescue and hazardous material handling, and are ready to respond to assist the ACT community 24 hours a day, seven days a week," he said.

After completing an orientation program, successful applicants will undertake a recruit college of approximately four months due to start later this year. The recruits will be posted to one of the nine stations across the Territory.

"The new intake of firefighters will discover that being a firefighter in the ACT Fire & Rescue is a rewarding career that will bring diverse challenges in a supportive and friendly environment," Mr Corbell said.

"A career in fire service is more than putting out fires, it's about making the community a safe place for people to live and work."

Those that are interested will be able to speak with firefighters at information sessions planned for the 18th and 20th of February, 2012 at the new ESA Training Centre in Hume.

For more information, interested applicants can visit the ACT Fire & Rescue website at http://esa.act.gov.au/actfr/careers/recruitment-inquiries/.
