Released 19/12/2011
Attorney General, Simon Corbell, has today announced the list of the most popular baby names in the ACT for 2011, revealing that Thomas and Olivia are the number one names for the year.
Mr Corbell said there had been a total of 5241 births in the ACT for 2011 to date, with Canberra parents continuing to choose traditional names for their children.
"Parents in 2011 have continued with the most popular names that have been seen in recent years," Mr Corbell said.
"The name William has been consistently popular over the last 10 years and has placed in the top two popular names for the past six years. It was also in the top ten in 1950.
"Olivia has been placed in the top ten for 13 out of the past 14 years and has held the number one spot for three out of the previous four years.
Samuel and Benjamin were the new entrants to the top 10 most popular boys names list this year, replacing Alexander and Ethan from the 2010 list. Boys names from 1930 and 1950 that have stood the test of time include James and William while names that appear to no longer be as popular are Kenneth, Frank or Donald.
Amelia, Isabella and Abigail are the new entrants to the top 10 girls names list this year, replacing Lily, Ruby and Mia from the 2010 list. There are fewer girls names which have stayed in fashion through the generations, with ACT parents today more likely to call their daughter Emily instead of Elizabeth or Dorothy.
"While taking the time to choose a name, it is important to remember that in ACT parents are required to register their child within 60 days of birth. Registration of your child's birth is free," Mr Corbell said.
"I urge any parent who has not yet registered their child to contact the Office of Regulatory Services, Births, Deaths and Marriages unit at the earliest opportunity to complete a birth registration statement.
Also released today was the list of top baby suburbs with Kambah topping the greatest number of births followed by Ngunnawal. Coming in at third and fourth place are Queanbeyan and Dunlop respectively.
