Scullin shops upgrade commences

Released 17/01/2012

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, today announced that construction of a $1.12 million upgrade to Scullin shops has commenced.

"The $1.12 million upgrade of Scullin shops will revitalise the area, providing locals and traders with a safer, more accessible and more attractive local centre," the Chief Minister said.

"Community feedback in recent years has demonstrated that locals place great value and pride in the amenity of their local shops, and I know that Scullin residents have been keen to see this upgrade commence. The contractor, Pyramid, has now commenced work and is expected to complete the upgrade by June this year.

Features of the upgrade include:

  • new lighting to enhance security;
  • new street furniture including seats, bins and a community noticeboard;
  • landscaping works;
  • upgrades to paving and lighting to improve pedestrian access;
  • improved stormwater drainage;
  • new toilet block; and
  • public artwork.

There was broad consultation on the upgrades and many suggestions from locals and traders were included in the final design.

"The work in Scullin is part of the ACT Government's ongoing investment in improving the amenity of shopping centres across the city," the Chief Minister said.

"In the past three years, the Government has completed upgrades to shopping centres at Ainslie, Lyons, Garran and Deakin.

"The Government will continue to deliver improvements to our public amenities and community places and spaces to ensure Canberrans enjoy a healthy lifestyle and have great places to meet and socialise," the Chief Minister concluded.
