Planning the future of Oaks Estate

Released 27/02/2012

The village of Oaks Estate is set to get a refresh with the government to begin consultation on a master plan for the area next month, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell said today.

"Oaks Estate is a unique corner of the ACT and a master plan will help define what is important about the area and how its character and quality can be conserved and enhanced," Mr Corbell said.

"It will be important to look at the cultural and natural heritage values, mix of housing, land use, potential growth, transport and community concerns for the future of the area.

"We want to hear what the community has to say given their intimate knowledge and understanding of the area.

"The ideas from the community about Oaks Estate will be important in developing a master plan that will be workable and successful."

Mr Corbell said the consultations will begin with a meeting to look at a vision for Oaks Estate and to put any issues on the table, followed by a workshop to explore possible options. These will feed into the draft master plan, which will have a six week consultation process.

The master plan is among a suite of master plans being developed to help guide Canberra's development. Current master plan studies include Weston group centre, Kambah, Tuggeranong town centre, Erindale group centre and Pialligo rural village.

"The community are invited to attend the ideas workshop on 14 March 2012 at the Oakes Estate Community Hall from 6 - 8 pm and the design workshop on 18 April 2012 also at the hall from 6-8pm," he said.
